Look in /etc/inetd.conf and comment out the ident service, and any
other services you don't need then send a HUP to inetd.

As far as it being "harmful", there's always a chance that any service
you run will have a security hole, possibly it just hasn't been found
yet.  So why take a chance?  Turn off everything you don't need.
