 I confirm that problem persist in FreeBSD 6.x, i386 & amd64 and Linux
 i386 also :) So it is not FreeBSD or port problem. 
 
 It seems that some-thing is definitely wrong, when nss_ldap.so uses
 persistent connections. 
 Currently I'm digging this out. 
 
 Current workaround: 
 
 in nss_ldap.conf uncomment this: 
 
 nss_connect_policy oneshot
