Argh.  The problem is that the whole current mechanism is messy.  At 
the other extreme, an elegant and logical solution would be far too 
heavyweight for the practicalities of the situation.

I did?  I think you have me and Brian confused.  I wouldn't let 2.2 
near this thing.
