From: Wolfgang Werner@CBTSYSTEMS on 02/24/99 04:40 PM PAST a few months ago I successfully installed via ftp freeBSD onto an i386 machine; the startup process used only one (1) floppy generated from your links. I voraciously spread the good word about freeBSD. The system was an old Gateway 2000 model p5-120. NOW I can not install freeBSD onto i386 machine: Gateway 2000 model e3000 (p5-200) FLOPPY BOOT FAILURE. Now to bring up another machine (due to the first having catastrophic hw failures) my attempt consistently fails in the boot process - I can not get to the setup of NIC for access to the ftp site. I have createdthe KERN and MFSROOT floppies (many times). Starting with KERN followed by MFSROOT I get: ================================ FreeBSD/i386 bootstrap loader, Revision 0.5 638/65532kB (jkh@time.cdrom.com, Mon Feb15 13:26:18 CMT 1999) /kernel text=0x18be9a data=0x1b338+0x1dccc syms=[0x4+0x23c30+0x4+0x243bb] Please insert MFS root floppy and press enter: [At this point I swap floppies and after pressing enter and waiting for about 2 - 5 seconds I see on the screen:] can't find'/mfsroot' Hit [Enter] to boot immediately, or any other key for command prompt. Booting [kernel] root device disk0s4a: invalid Type '?' for a list of commands, 'help' for more detailed help. disk0s4a:> [when I now type ls and wait for about 2-5 seconds I see on the screen:] open '/'failed: input/output error disk0s4a:> ======================================== QUESTIONS 1. If you are able to provide the 1 floppy bootup process to me would you please do so? 2. What is the problem?
