Wierd number. Are you sure you're not going from the console back to X? If that's the case, try Ctrl-Alt-F1. I believe XFree86-4 changed to use the virtual console it was started from (or F1, but I never start it from anything else). If you're going from X to a console, try Ctrl-Alt-F2.
