I've run into similar problem with Compaq branded card under 3.4R. Chip number GD82559, series(?) L933SB2. The PCI chip ID was set to 82558, but I was able to distinguish between 8255[89] by reading PHY revision code directly from PHY's registers and the PHY revision code was the same as in Intel's docs for 82559.
