Ok Will.. makes more sense (at least to me) now :) You actually have the same problem I had a while back. I'm not sure about how recent versions may of the boot managers may have changed, but when I had windows on my primary HD and FreeBSD on my secondary HD, someone told me that the only boot manager that would span those disks was OS/BS Beta. Granted this was over 1.5 years ago and the other boot managers may have changed. Unless someone has the solution though, it's probably worth a shot for you to try it. =) You can get it and give it a shot from: ftp.FreeBSD.org/pub/FreeBSD/tools/osbsbeta.exe Just remember to read the read me :) Start out by (on your windows disk) doing an fdisk /mbr to repunch to boot record - to make it "clean" again, if you will. Then run the os/bs installation from a dos-reboot - *NOT* from a dos window inside of windows... if you do that the install will never work. (ie: start --> shutdown --> restart in MS-dos mode). Also, you should NOT have to put the boot manager on the boot sectors of both HD's. The 'puter looks at the boot sector of your boot device for the answers to its booting questions - not to both boot sectors. Once you get a boot manager sucessfully installed on the boot sector of your C drive, you should be good to go. If you're installing a boot manager to the boot sector of the C drive and not even seeing it come up at reboot though, something sounds kinda really odd. >Well, Jay, i gave the bootinst.exe program a shot, but it didn't work. >I ran it, rebooted to the CDROM, installed FreeBSD, restarted, but it >just went straight into Win98. > >And to clarify what my problem, (sorry that i wasn't being clear enough >John), I cannot seem to get my computer to give me the option of running >Windows 98, or FreeBSD when my system boots up. In other words, i can't >get FreeBSD's boot manager to work, and now the bootinst.exe is proven >to not work. > >To be really specific with what i want to do: during the installation >of FreeBSD, i want to be able to install FreeBSD to my second hard drive >(D:) and then i want to be able to install a boot manager in the boot >sector of my first drive (C:). Reverse order would work too, and i'm >not totally sure if i'd need to install the boot manager to the boot >sectors of both hard drives, but i'd just like to be able to run FreeBSD >after i install it. > >Hopefully that was more direct! ;) > >Perhaps there's something i'm reading wrong somewhere, but this problem >is growing into something mountainous. > >Thanks for any further help that anyone could offer me, To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
