Well, just an update for everyone... I thought I had the problem licked with
this
DPT controller.  Last night I shut down the machine,
and this morning I booted it up and it hung on the file system checks

I then got experimental again.  I booted up with the distribution cd
and tried to repartion/reinstall freebsd again and guess what, even with the
bios settings from the time that worked, it still hung in the newfs

Just thought I would pass on to everyone that this is still an issue...
