That argument only works when there is no functional impact elsewhere, e.g. you're off in a corner working on a new NIC driver or writing some new utility. If you replace an existing component or do things which affect others, however, then what you do has much wider repercussions and if you get 5 other people embroiled in an argument over them then you've just diverted resources and the project's priorities DO matter, thank you very much.
