The solution: I called AST helpdesk, and believe it or not - they where aware of pccard problems. New updated bios and a disable of the PnP and USB in the setup... The laptop had obviouslun run out of irq and dma resources. So now my X11 and network runs perfect, at last! Also, Nokia Cellular card works without any quirks at all, even hotplugged.
