Maybe I am remembering wrong, but it seems > like that is the way it goes. Yes. 'NONE' disables sendmail entirely. I believe that 'NO' means disable the smtp daemon, and only run submit. All changes should be done in /etc/rc.conf only, as per the large warning in /etc/defaults/rc.conf.
