There appears to be a 1996/10/01 date on the tarfile at prep, 
so it may have been stepped on...

FWIW, there is another distibution site that may be considered
more authoritative, as there are patches up to 1996/09/20 here:

ftp://ftp.imag.fr:pub/Linux/ZLIBC/mtools/
