FreeBSD is based on BSD, the Unix Distribution from the University of California at Berkeley. In that sense, FreeBSD is UNIX. Linux is and independent implementation of a Unix-like Operating System. Depending on the distribution, Linux "feels" more like a System V Unix than a BSD Unix. Most of the books on Unix (which don't say System V explicitly) talk about BSD Unix since that flavor of Unix was the most popular in universities.
