4100s and other "big iron" machines tweak a bug in the bootloader
that's been used in the 4.x releases.  The problem has been fixed in
-current, but hasn't yet been merged back.

You could grab the 5.0 kern.flp from
ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/snapshots/alpha/5.0-20010721-CURRENT/floppies/kern.flp
and replace the kernel with the one from the 4.x kern.flp
