Unfortunately, that isn't the problem.
I checked it out and i am using /usr/bin/make
and there is no copy of gmake on this system anyway.
any other ideas?

This isn't enough information for anyone to be of much help.

Make sure you're using /usr/bin/make and not /usr/local/bin/make

bmake != gmake.
