Ah, dear me, and of course we can suddenly ignore the history of the last
few centuries in the British Isles (correct me, but doesn't the republic of
Ireland use the same pound symbol as is used in the UK, and are there not a
couple of other countries in the same boat - or at least were in the recent
past).  Even if the use drops out of currency (pun intended), there must be
millions of documents containing this symbol.  The printed representation
cannot and should not be changed, overnight or over any other interval.
