The APC SmartUPS series is supported by upsd.  upsd is on your FreeBSD
CDROM in /xperimnt.  Upsd can probe the UPS for various data items and
can shutdown the machine.  

I'm running this on a SmartUPS 600 and it works great.   

If you don't have a cd, check the -questions mail archives, someone
maintains a US mirror.
