I have been messing with this problem = for several=20 weeks.
Turns out the problem has nothing to do = with the=20 BSD driver or the Harddisk.
The problem was that my SDRAM was not = set up=20 correctly in my BIOS.
 
profile: motherboard =3D EPOX : = EP-MVP3G2 w/ATA66=20 Maxstor HD and 128Meg SDRAM.
 
BIOS settings changes:  =
  - BANK 0/1 DRAM Timing: SDRAM = Normal (not=20 fast)
  - DRAM Page Mode: = disabled
