I edited devfs.conf as perm lpt0 0666. When I entered the CUPS manager this time I was offered the choice of the printer on the parallel port(previously only USB and Network). On the next screen I was offered the choice of 20 different drivers. I picked hpjis (the same as HPLIP) and printed the test page. Great fully functional with colors. I also printed ps file from the command line with lp command (previously I removed native lp command from /usr/bin so that CUPS can take over with its own commands). On the more sober note I could not get hp-setup find the printer this time either. I think it is worth playing since this is one of ALL-IN-ONE devices and I read that HPLIP support scan option as well. These kind of parallel port scanners are not detected by Sane.
