I was going to make a similar change to remove root from wheel in /etc/group, but couldn't remember if there would be nasty side effects. There didn't appear to be any in local testing, but you should count this as a solicitation to inquire as to whether there are some I haven't found. Generally speaking, we appear to have a convention (reinforced by our user management tools) that we don't explicitly list users whose primary gid is that of a group in that group definition. FWIW, I notice that root is also a member of a boatload of funky groups (staff, kmem, ..) which is a bit odd also, in my view. I'll probably clean that up also unless there are objections.
