I am by far no unix expert. I learned what I do know about Unix and FreeBSD
through "The Complete FreeBSD". I know very little about what "Real unix"
is, but with so many OS's making up unix as they go along (ex. Linux, etc.),
It's very difficult to actually learn a real Unix platform. One of the
reasons why I use FreeBSD is because I had a lot of trouble with Linux.
Most of the books give references to URL's which become broken right away.
Or the online docs that books point to are so "Off-topic", I couldn't figure
out how to do anything. FreeBSD provides a very simple Unix operating
system for anyone to learn unix. I think "The Complete FreeBSD" is a great
book for someone to understand a unix OS. There's step-by-step
instructions which work and are easy to follow. After you lean the OS, you
can begin to learn how Unix works. That's the approach I'm taking towards
learning unix. As for the "Unix for the Impatient" book, I've never read
it. I like the "Unix Secrets" book :)
