Did I miss anything? Yes, you missed something. mail/heirloom-mailx has been supsrseded by Steffen Daode Nurpmeso's S-nail. I haven't tried that yet, but remember a disturbing bug in heirloom-mailx; this was on Linux: e-newsletters from about.com each displayed as two messages. I don't know if this is fixed in S-nail.
