You could check the ftp man page: (man ftp)..
in particular the section about the .netrc file.  An example nrt
follows:

$ cat .netrc
machine ftp.ascend.com login ftp password mango@cmq.com macdef init
cd /pub/Software-Releases
dir

You get the idea...
