Thanks for the replies guys. Turns out that the my.cnf file needed to be in either /db/mysql/ my.cnf (where i am pointing the datadir to) OR /usr/local/etc/my.cnf. I hit a problem when I moved it to either folder though because some of the variables for mysql were out and the default socket/pid-file directory was not created. * mkdir /var/run/mysqld and change owner to mysql (for socket & pid- file) * change my.cnf language variable to /usr/local/share/mysql/english (was previously /usr/share/mysql/english and causing mysql to fail to start) * mkdir /etc/mysql/conf.d for additional settings, either that or comment out !includedir line in the my.cnf file, I decided to mkdir for fun times So there we go... only took a few days but nailed it ;) thanks to everyone who provided feedback... i hope this helps others out in the future.
