I don't think you can do this with the VGA driver. According to vga(4) it won't use more than 256K of video memory, which won't get you much of a display... 1024x768x8 requires 1MB, as I recall. What was the problem with your r128 (sorry if I missed the thread earlier)? I've attached my XF86Config that works beautifully for my 8MB Rage 128 RL... this was mostly autogenerated; I think the only thing I had to do was reorder the resolutions so it comes up in 1600x1200x24 by default.
