Usually when I finish up on my system I am working as root and so I never noticed this before. The permissions were 555 but every time I used halt as an ordinary user I got operation not permitted. I fixed this problem by changing the permissions to 4550. Why does it have to be like this?(I really don't like suid-I had to reinstall several times because of malicious scripts. It is not so bad now that I know to watch out for them.) TIA, Chris Moline To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
