If so you might have just caught > something in a half-way state. I use ezbounce, which isn't a transparent proxy but offers other compelling features. For instance, it allows you to detach from an IRC session and re-attach later from a different client, transparent to the IRC server. This can be useful for moving between office and home, for instance.
