This is really two bugs:
(1) Package repository contains an incompatible kmod which panics the system
instead of checking compatibility.
(2) Package repository doesn't contain a working i915kms for 12.1

To fix (1) I propose a much simpler fix: Patch the kmod itself to take
responsibility for checking whether the kernel is compatible, since the ker=
nel
otherwise assumes modules to be forward compatible.

While indeed, working around the issue is easy enough for the system
administrator, I agree with Tomasz that the binary pkg situation is
unacceptable.
