Well, the problem isn't in portupgrade per se, but in the fact that new
releases of GNOME components often break ABI or in some cases even API.

What type of machine do you have? My aging K6-II/500 with 384MB of RAM
compiles all of x11/gnome in several hours (assuming that the XFree86 is
already installed), so that everything isn't as black as it seems.
