If the new autoconf and automake is really that incompatable with the older stuff, maybe we should repo-copy the current automake and autoconf ports to *-lagacy and then we can upgrade automake and autoconf to the latest _released_ versions. Then the ports that break can be set to use the -legacy version and there is no confusion about what you should use when starting something new that will use automake or autoconf.
