The kernel wouldn't boot on the 486. Thinking I might have hit Stable while it was suffering transient instability, I re-cvsupped on January 25, rebuilt world, rebuilt and reinstalled the kernel, and suffered the same panic while booting: . . . ahc0: at 0x8c00-0x8cff, irq 10 (edge) ahc0: on eisa0 slot 8 Fatal trap 12: page fault while in kernel mode fault virtual address = 0x40 fault code = supervisor read, page not present instruction pointer = 0x8:0xc015831a stack pointer = 0x10:0xc030f394 frame pointer = 0x10:0xc030fe94 code segment = base 0x0, limit 0xfffff, type 0x1b = DPL 0, pres 1, def32 1, gran 1 processor eflags = interrupt enabled, resume, IOPL = 0 current process = 0 (swapper) interrupt mask = net tty bio cam trap number = 12 panic: page fault Uptime: 0s Automatic reboot in 15 seconds - press a key on the console to abort Help!
