For KDE:
$ echo exec startkde > ~user/.xinitrc
For GNOME:
$ echo exec gnome-session > ~user/.xinitrc
For another WM:
$ echo exec <WMname> > ~user/.xinitrc
where <WMname> is icewm for IceWM, blackbox for blackbox, etc.

Now, no matter which one you did:
$ echo '#!/bin/sh' > ~user/.xsession
$ cat ~user/.xinitrc >> ~user/.xsession
$ chmod +x ~user/.xsession
