hello, world\n

About every other time I boot my system (3.4-stable) hangs even before
the kernel gets its chance to take over the hardware, which is an ASUS
P2L97-S mobo, ACPI Bios Version 1005, Adaptec AIC 7880 SCSI Bios v2.01,
Intel Celeron CPU @ 333MHz.

When things go well, the SCSI bios says

<<<Press <Ctrl><A> for SCSI Select(TM) Utility>>>

SCSI ID 0: SEAGATE ST31200N HARD DISK 1
   SCSI ID 2: PIONEER CD-ROM DR-U10X
   SCSI ID 3: YAMAHA CRW6416S
SCSI ID 6: IBM DCAS-34330 HARD DISK 2

When things go wrong, one of these happens:

- hang before "SCSI ID 0:" is displayed
- hang before "SEAGATE ..." is displayed
- doesn't find target 3 or 6
- when the kernel could be booted:
"ahc0:A:0: unknown SCSI bus phase. Attempting to continue" (one or more of these lines)
- not sure when I've seen this one:
"time-out failure during inquiry SCSI command. Rescanning SCSI bus"

I've triple checked termination - it's on the hostadapter and on ID 0,
which is the last device on an 8-connector cable of 1.5m length. The
device sequence along the cable is: host adapter, ID 2, ID 3, ID 6, ID
0. I've unplugged the PIONEER or YAMAHA, no change. After pressing the
reset button (and sometimes repeating the procedure) the system boots
successfully and works like a charm. The system is switched on
externally via a switch in the wall plug, (not using the ATX power
button).

Do I have a crappy mobo/on-board SCSI? Or is one of the SCSI devices
the culprit? Should I rearrange the bus? What else can I do to track this down?

Here's the dmesg output
