Get a 10baseT switch. I found a good deal on HP right now 
(http://www.hp.com/go/switchrebate). This switch costs ~$1400 
incl. the SNMP management module. And HP has a "tradein" for $750
available. Now you have a per port SNMP statistic. Works great for
me.
