Sorry, I can't help with the 'dvdrip' port problem, but I observe that the 'mencoder' portion of the 'mplayer' port will rip DVD's raw or optionally re-encode them to a wide variety of different formats, including MPEG, DiV/X 3/4/5, etc.

Might get you out of trouble.
