I don't use HSphere on FreeBSD at all, but you can use Java 1.4 now. http://www.brettsbsd.net/~estrabd/blog/index.php?/archives/21_Java_1.4_on_FreeBSD_4.10_in_8_steps.html Those are some good instructions on installing Java on FreeBSD.
