It's not likely that the system is hanging; it's probably just
not responding (which doesn't make a difference unless you
can telnet in on a network).  If it's blinking, you can give
the three-finger salute to reboot between X starts.

Try using XF86Setup and instead of selecting a card, just
choose "detailed setup" and simply tell it to use the S3 driver.
