It's really not that much effort. :-) Why on earth would you believe that `lpr' will work when simply cat'ing a file to /dev/lpt0 doesn't even work?? The line printer spooler is a whole complex and convoluted subsystem. But no matter how complex and sophisticated it gets, I can pretty well assure you that even it won't work if you can't even get characters down the wire and to the printer.
