Something about the difference between gdm and xdm seems to cause certain important environment variables not to get set, i.e. using perl generates messages like perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C"). perl: warning: Setting locale failed. perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings: LC_ALL = (unset), LANG = "en_US" are supported and installed on your system. Anyone have a clue? -- Michael D.
