yes I've been wondering about this...
kinda needs the 'open' call to do another 'probe' before linking in
the right driver set..

actually I wonder if that might not be a bad way to operate at all times?
It does a 'scsi_test_ready()' already..
it wouldn't be much to have a 'quirk' that made it do a scsi_identify()
as well..
