Yes, ppp should probably be newer than 2.2.  Someone will probably
update it at some point (I heard some rumblings about this), but the
big reason that this hasn't happened is because of excellent support
of user ppp (which does most of everything that kernel PPP does).

If you want to do it and contribute it, you should probably ask around
(freebsd-hackers?) to find out if anyone else has worked on it.
