From: W Chu <apimpression@mindspring.com> Subject: Questions from new user Date: Tue, Sep 04, 2001 at 08:47:47PM -0700 Hello there, Since somebody has answered most of these questions already, I think I can answer the last unanswered one. Namely: > (2) I am SuSE Linux user. What is the learning curve for me to learn > FreeBSD ? Well, if someone starts to learn about FreeBSD without prior knowledge of how a Unix-like system is supposed to work, it is probably a bit tough, and requires some serious reading before one begins to grasp how things are set up. The fact that you have used another Unix-like system before (SuSE Linux), will probably help a lot. There are many similarities in the way things are done in the Linux world, and the way everything works in FreeBSD. There are also a few differences, some of them minor and insignificant, other more important. You will find that the FAQ [1] and the Handbook [2] are very valuable resources in discovering what these differences are, and what the "canonical" way of doing everything in FreeBSD is. Other online resources, as the FreeBSD project homepage [3], and the Monthly [4] or Daily [5] editions of Daemonnews, are among my favorites for discovering new things in FreebSD. With the extensive and detailed documentation that FreeBSD has, in the form of manpages, tutorials, online references, etc. Even this list (especially the -questions list), has been a great place to ask questions and find answers for me. It should not be very easy to learn how it works. Being a Unix-like system will also (very soon) prove to be very nice :-) Ciao, and welcome to FreeBSD. -giorgos [-- References --] [1] The FreeBSD FAQ, (english version) http://www.freebsd.org/faq/ [2] The FreeBSD Handbook, (english version) http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/ [3] The FreeBSD project homepage http://www.freebsd.org/ [4] Daemonnews (monthly) http://www.daemonnews.org/ [5] Daemonnews (daily) http://daily.daemonnews.org/ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
