     you have forgotten the "pnp os enable " command while in user kernel 
     config, after boot (don't remember exactly the end of the incantation 
     ... ;-)) after recompiling your kernel

Which sound driver are you using?  If you have `controller snd0' you have 
VoxWare, if you have `device pcm0' then you have the Luigi driver.
     
As usual dmesg output is helpful.
