P.S. -- The console messages said things like

/kernel: free inode /var/7980 had 2 blocks

Oh, and comsat was dying with messages like

/kernel: pid 2927 (comsat), uid0: exited on signal 11

These errors only crop up now and then, but there is still some slight
flakiness (nondestructive, thank Heaven).
