Yes, but this overrides the user's CFLAGS settings. A better idea:
MAKE_ENV+= CFLAGS="${CFLAGS} ${PTHREAD_CFLAGS}" \
LDFLAGS=${PTHREAD_LIBS}
(remember, ${PTHREAD_LIBS} already has quotes)
