It's only use seems (to me) to be to disable or enable device drivers when the GENERIC kernel is used. After you have a working kernel, you can do a dmesg and see the effect the stuff in /boot/kernel.conf has. You can then delete = /boot/kernel.conf and see the difference in dmesg. I think there was something that one could do in kernel.conf to deal with some non pnp sound cards in FreeBSD-3.x Good luck with your kernel compile. John.
