I've had good results using Ranish Partition Manager.  A DOS
program from http://www.users.intercom.com/~ranish/part

It has a tiny boot manager that resides in the MBR, or larger one
if you need more verbose choices.  I'd like a FreeBSD version
really.  It would be good if the DOS version could manage UFS too.

The site is worth a visit for information on drive layouts and the
boot process etc.

Boot managers are not OS dependant (AFAIK).
