Well, I'm not sure it'll work but, if you're using something like tar, cpio, or dump to write the tape, you might want to try using team(1) to buffer the data as it goes to the drive. The team(1) program was, I believe, originally written by Joerg Wunsch to keep cdrom burners supplied with a constant, steady stream of data. It might also be able to keep the DLT4000 happy. You can find team(1) in the ports/packages collection.
