I would also try to be more specific about the commands you are running by copying the exact commands you are typing and the operating system's response like so: ~ % cd /usr/src/sys/i386/conf/ /usr/src/sys/i386/conf % ./LINT zsh: permission denied: ./LINT So we can know exactly what you're doing. Saying "I went to /usr/src/sys/i386/conf/GENERIC" doesn't say _how_ you went there, in fact it's pretty meaningless.
