Well, as a newbie and as the original poster of the problem, I can say that I appreciate any and all advice given to me. I can also say that someone on this list gave me the solution within 24 hours of my original post - so anything that came afterwards was an added bonus. BTW - I suppose chmod would do the trick too, but I fixed the problem in this case by adding my account to the group "operator" in /etc/group. I suppose chmod would be a better solution if you wanted *all* users on the system to have access to the cd-rom, but in my case I'm the only user so it's not a big issue. M.
